French-Riviera secret Paradise : Porquerolles

French-Riviera secret Paradise : Porquerolles is the one spot you don’t want to miss if you visit South of France this summer!

Porquerolles is a small island located in Var, Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur, South of France. It is part of the Port Cros National Park. Its population is about 200 and the land is about 1,254 hectares. On the cost, It’s turquoise water and fine sand beaches looks like paradise on earth, in the land the trails and sightseeing are breathtaking!

Access:

To access the island there is a short 10 min boat ride. Click here to find out more about shuttle and ferry prices. There are multiple companies to choose from.

Accommodation:

The Island is easily accessible during the day, however you can also choose to stay overnight as the island offers more than 50 locations to offer such as Hotels, Holiday rentals, Guesthouses, Holiday residences to On-board ships!! Most of these accommodations are located in the Village and harbor.

There is one place I really want to talk about: “Le Mas du Langoustier hotel”. It is a 4 star Hotel located at the western tip of the Ile de Porquerolles. This place is the cherry on top of the Porquerolles Cake. 🙂 If you want more information please check out there website here.

Get around:

Walk and hikes are definitely possible around the island. If you want to visit most of it in one day you may want to rent a bike (there are about 9 bike rental shops on the island all located in the village). Disclaimer: there are some steep hills to climb!

I have also heard a rumor about ONE taxi cab on the island…I have personally never witnessed it! LOL

There are three sides of this island:

1-The Village and harbor

The harbor and village

The Village and Harbor are the very definition of southern France living. This picturesque historic village with Provençale architecture is gorgeous and very “Instagrammable“. In the heart of the village, located by the harbor you will find the main place, full of restaurants and small shops.

Pro tips: stop at Coco Frio for an Ice cream, you won’t regret it! They have the best flavors on earth! Check them out on Instagram @cocofrio.porquerolles

2- The Beaches

La Courtade beach

The Beaches are probably my favorite parts of the Island (I may say the same about the other two sides LOL). The waters are so clear and the sands are so fine that you may feel like you landed in paradise. There are 5 distincts beaches on the island:

  1. Le Langoustier beach
  2. La Courtade beach
  3. Notre Dame beach
  4. Le Langoustier black beach
  5. Argent beach

I tired to pick one for you but the reality is that there are all beautiful in there own way. They are located on the northern side of the island and all accessible via boat (boat rental available in the harbor) or with a short walk from the harbor. You can also rent a bike and ride to the beaches.

For those with advanced hiking skills you will have access to secluded creeks on the southern side of the island.

3- Sightseeing

Moulin du Bonheur Windmill

There is so many sights to see on the island. We already talked about the beaches, the village and the harbor, here is what you can find inland:

  1. Moulin du Bonheur windmill
  2. Villa Carmignac – Exhibition Space
  3. Sainte Agathe fort
  4. Sainte Anne church
  5. Alycastre fort
  6. Repentance fort
  7. Emmanuel Lopez garden
  8. Porquerolles Lighthouse
  9. Grand Langoustier fort
Sainte Agathe Fort

There is so much more to do on and around the island like diving, Scuba Diving, Sail Cruises, Paddle rentals, Jet Ski and Yacht rentals. Find more information on all of those activities here.
